Educational activities

Throughout the year, the educational service team offers activities for young visitors on different themes: discovery tours and thematic tours devoted to history, architecture, and art history.

Each of these activities can be adapted to the pedagogical projects of the different groups including children with motor disabilities (with accompanying persons to carry them if they are in a wheelchair).

Support for the visit

A visit booklet including a historical presentation, a map of the city and commented photographs of the free parts and the walking tour not accessible by wheelchair. This booklet is available free of charge at the castle ticket office.

Good to know

  • We strongly recommend that disabled visitors be accompanied by an able-bodied person (the tour is vast and uneven).
  • Assistance dogs are allowed.
  • Resting seats are available in the main courtyard and in the lapidary museum.
  • Adapted sanitary facilities in the castle.
  • Self-guided tour partially accessible by wheelchair and difficult for people with reduced mobility and great fatigue: many steps and spiral staircases.
  • The ramparts are not recommended for people who are very tired.

Parking & access

Parking

Reserved parking spaces
For individual visitors who hold a GIG or GIC badge or a "European parking card", several reserved spaces are available in the Delteil parking lot, which is subject to a charge (free after 7:30 pm), opposite the entrance to the Cité.

Drop-off point
For individual visitors, there is a drop-off point (bus stop) in front of the main entrance to the Cité.

Access to the monument

  • The main entrance of the city of Carcassonne is located at the Narbonnaise Gate, which is preceded by a drawbridge and paved areas.
  • After a climb of about 200 m on the paved main street, the castle's barbican is accessible.
  • The ticket booths located in the castle's barbican are accessible, but it is preferable that the person accompanying the visitor purchase their ticket there. The receptionist at the entrance of the monument will open a reserved access for them.
  • People with reduced mobility or who are very tired, each accompanied by an able-bodied person, can access the monument in the same way. The door of the castle is preceded by paved areas.

Inside the monument

  • The main courtyard is accessible.
  • The Lapidary Museum, on the second floor, is accessible from the Tour de la Poudre, after crossing two towers and numerous steps (20 steps). The stone rooms can be reached directly from the walkway.
  • In the lapidary museum, resting places are available in several rooms.
  • The audiovisual presentation is on the second floor, which can only be reached by climbing a series of steps:
  • From the courtyard of honor to the landing for the main staircase: 3 steps
  • Access to the south courtyard: 2 large steps.
  • Staircase to the second floor: 15 steps, followed by a landing, then 4 steps.
  • Stairs from the first to the second floor: 13, then 8, then 13, then 2 steps separated by large landings.
  • Route on the castle's jacket: not accessible by wheelchair; the crossing of the hoardings is done by a flight of steps.
  • From the model room (2nd floor), you can freely access the upper parts of the castle (fortified castle wall).
  • Circuit from the model room to the Pinte tower: 4 steps to reach the curtain wall above the courtyard, then a spiral staircase of 7 steps, then 3 steps.
  • Possibility of a walk in the high lices up to the Saint-Nazaire basilica. Caution: the stony path makes access difficult.
  • Stroll in the low lices possible until the tower of Tréseau.
  • The access to the interior of the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire by the North gate (opening of the two leaves possible) is preceded by a step.

Access to the towers of the East gate
